Best laptops for Solidworks

If you’re a little familiar with the realm of 3D CAD designing, you must have heard of SolidWorks, the popular CAD software published by Dassault Systèmes. With a user base almost as large as AutoCAD’s, SolidWorks is a favorite in the fashion, sports, and automobile industry. Other notable uses stretch as far as the space exploration industry, or the design of medical equipment. For those who are new to this software, don’t be fooled by the clean user interface. SolidWorks gets deep and complicated the more you’re willing to play with it.
SolidWorks is particularly demanding on your hardware. It’s a common misconception, though, that you absolutely need a high-end workstation to get it running smoothly. If you’re buying into that, you’re going to spend several thousands of dollars on a certified workstation, when you could have done with a way cheaper laptop. SolidWorks is a hugely versatile software, with performance shifting as the assemblies you work on get larger and larger. For example, a university student dealing with small assemblies (around 100 parts) can get their assignments done with a consumer level laptop, or one that is designed for gaming.

How to choose a laptop for SolidWorks?

A good thing to start with is by checking the official system requirements of SolidWorks for Widnows, which you can access here.

  • Processor:3.3 GHz or higher
  • RAM:16 GB or more
PDM Contributor or Viewer: 8 GB or more
    ECC RAM recommended
  • Graphics Card : Certified cards and drivers
  • Storage:SSD drives recommended for optimal performance

As you can see, the official system requirements are similar with many other CAD programs, but they don’t provide a lot of info for users who don’t necessarily plan to buy a Workstation laptop.

So, before making an investment with a new laptop for running SolidWorks, it’s best that you figure out which kind of projects you’re going to work on. The diversity in project sizes is the reason why there’s no easy telling which hardware specifications will suit you. Speaking about RAM, SolidWorks will occupy 4 GB on its own, meaning a laptop with 8 GB of RAM is the minimum for using SolidWorks. Although professional users, who rely on their machine for job assignments, will need up to 32 GB of RAM to handle complex assemblies. Thus, we’ll deal with consumer and professional laptops separately.

CONSUMER LAPTOPS:

Processor: while modeling with SolidWorks is doable on an Intel Core i5 processor, an i7 is going to be necessary for rendering and simulations. It might be best to up your game here, since you won’t be able to upgrade your processor once you’ve bought the laptop. Also, as with many other CAD programs, SolidWorks performs best with a higher frequency Processor. When opening and saving files, rebuilding assemblies, and rotating models, SolidWorks will mostly be using a single core, so a higher frequency will help a lot.
RAM: as stated above, go for a laptop with 8GB of RAM if you’re on a budget. Most consumer laptops, especially in the gaming department, come with a free slot to easily upgrade your RAM as you see the need for it, especially if your SolidWorks projects get larger.
GPU: we’d recommend picking a laptop with a graphics card as low as a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti, with 4 GB of VRAM.
Storage: aim for a 256 GB SSD. Despite costing a little more than a traditional HDD, a solid state drive is going to have a huge impact on the loading time of your assemblies, as well as the laptop’s booting.

PROFESSIONAL WORKSTATIONS

Processor: you could get your work done with the latest generation Intel Core i7 processor. And as stated above, SolidWorks performs better with a higher frequency processor. If you’re a professional and if you’re working on complex projects, you can also consider a laptop with a Xeon processor.
RAM: depending on your usual assembly size, you’re going to need at least 16 GB of RAM. 32 GB is the recommended amount for SolidWorks professionals.
GPU: stick with the Nvidia Quadro series of graphics card for workstation. Before purchasing, you can make sure your graphics card of choice is certified on the Dassault Systèmes website.
Storage: for complex projects, a larger storage unit is going to come in handy. You should still aim for a SSD as the booting unit, but consider upgrading your laptop with a 1TB HDD for the additional space. Hybrid workstations are also available in the market.
To get you started in your search for the perfect companion, here are ten great laptops suitable for SolidWorks, both consumer level and workstations.

These are our recommendation in order to choose a laptop for running SolidWorks. Don’t forget to take into consideration other important factor, such as the display size, battery life, ports…etc. And now, let’s check some of the best laptops for SolidWorks we selected for you:
