A few years ago, laptops with 64GB RAM were simply impossible to find, and to handle intensive software or work on complex computing projects, many professionals, and especially engineers, had to use a desktop for that. There are a lot of things that only a desktop computer can do, but high performance laptops are slowly closing the gap. If you’re an engineer, a data scientist, or simply an enthusiast looking for a laptop with 64GB RAM then keep reading! We have compiled a short list of some of the best 64GB RAM laptops available right now. But before we show you our list, let’s check some of the reasons why you might need a laptop with LOTS of RAM in the first place!

What would you need 64GB RAM for? And are laptops with 64GB RAM worth it?

RAM is one of the most important things to consider when buying a new laptop. Having more RAM memory has incredible benefits: it increases the system’s cache, causing everything to run and load faster, and it will also improve your experience when running multiple tabs open at once. There are programs that take up many gigabytes of RAM memory when running. Also, if you’ve read some of the guides published here, we usually recommend laptops with at least 8GB of RAM as minimum, for all users. In fact, even some smartphones nowadays have more RAM than that, such as the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus, which has 12GB of RAM. For advanced users or professionals, that minimum can be 16GB RAM, especially if you’re going to do some video editing, 3D modelling and rendering, or if you’re working with large data files.

Having more RAM allows your system to perform better, by reducing the number of times the hard drive is requested (even with a fast SSD). If you are someone who constantly experiences lag or programs freezing, then you’re experiencing the side effects of not having enough RAM. For example, Google Chrome is known for consuming a huge amount of RAM, even when closed; and if you’re working simultaneously on another RAM eating program, things can quickly get out of control.

Depending on the complexity of your work, you might need a laptop with 64GB RAM or not. As you know, not all programs are designed equally, and some of them have better RAM management than others. But I guess that if you’re here, you’ve probably already done a good analysis of how much RAM you need; especially if you’re an engineer. Here are examples of some of the tasks that require a laptop with a high amount of RAM: Running multiple Virtual machines, Batch image processing, Gaming, working on complex 3D models, professional video editing, create RAMDisks, work with large databases …etc. So, if you’re planning to do some of these task, investing in a high performance laptop can be wise choice.

However, keep in mind that 64GB RAM laptops are usually designed for professional users, and thus, they can be very expensive. If you’re on a tight budget, then you might consider getting a desktop, unless you really need a mobile system. You can also get a system with less RAM installed, but which still supports 64GB RAM. This means that you can add more RAM later if needed. Most laptop of this category come with 2 RAM slots, but you must still check the specs and make sure that the system is easily upgradable.

How to choose the best high performance laptop for you:

Most high performance laptops come with the latest generation multicore processors, lots of RAM and storage, and dedicated graphics. And while this guide is about laptops that come with 64GB RAM, it doesn’t mean that it’s the only thing that matters when getting a new laptop. Here are some tips:

  • CPU

As most people say, the CPU is the heart of your system, it does most of the computing work and it’s one of the main components that will affect your work flow. Most high end laptops come with multi core I7 processors (or an AMD equivalent), and while a multicore processor is a must, you should also consider the clock speed of the CPU. Some programs are single threaded, and they rarely use of all the other cores, thus choosing a processor that has a higher clock speed will boost performance. A popular example is AutoCAD.

  • Internal Storage

Most high end laptops will come with an SSD. An SSD is highly recommended if you don’t want to bottleneck your performance. However, if you will be working with huge file and need many terabytes of storage capacity, then a regular hard drive is inevitable. The good news is that many laptops nowadays have two drives, a fast SSD drive for storing the OS and program files, and a regular drive for storing data. NVME SSDs are also highly recommended, as they provide the fastest speeds thanks to PCIe connectivity.

  • GPU

If you’ll be using the laptop for video editing, gaming or other activities like 3D rendering, then a high end dedicated graphics card is mandatory. However, some people won’t need a dedicated GPU; for example, if you will be running multiple virtual machines, you will need lots of RAM, but there is no need for a GPU. Keep in mind that integrated graphics will use a portion of your RAM is you’re doing any task that requires a gpu.

  • Cooling

Since these powerful laptops have desktop-level specifications, some models are prone to overheating and the fan noises can get quite loud, especially if you’re stretching the laptop to the fullest of its abilities. While build quality can vary from a laptop to another, you can also get a separate cooling system for your laptop.
